How to Make a Concrete Sidewalk: Step-by-Step Overview (and When to Hire Instead)
Pouring a concrete sidewalk is a doable DIY project for a handy homeowner — but it’s more involved than most people expect. Concrete is unforgiving: you have a limited window to work it once it’s mixed, and mistakes are permanent. This guide walks through the full process honestly so you can decide whether to tackle it yourself or hire a contractor.
How to Measure a Sidewalk for Concrete
Before buying materials, you need to know how much concrete you’ll need.
Step 1: Calculate square footage Measure the length and width of your planned walkway in feet and multiply.
Example: 4 ft wide × 30 ft long = 120 sq ft
Step 2: Convert to cubic feet Standard residential sidewalks are 4 inches (1/3 foot) thick.
120 sq ft × 0.33 ft = 39.6 cubic feet
Step 3: Convert to cubic yards Concrete is sold by the cubic yard (27 cubic feet per yard).
39.6 ÷ 27 = 1.47 cubic yards
Add 10% for waste and overage: ~1.6 cubic yards
For a small sidewalk (under 1 cubic yard), bags of pre-mixed concrete are practical. A 60 lb bag yields about 0.45 cubic feet — you’d need roughly 90 bags for the example above. For anything larger, a ready-mix truck delivery is far more efficient.
What You’ll Need
Tools:
- Measuring tape, stakes, and string line
- Flat spade and/or excavator (rental)
- Plate compactor (rental)
- Circular saw or hand saw for form boards
- Float, bull float (for larger slabs), and edger
- Broom for texture finish
- Mixing barrel or wheelbarrow (for bag concrete)
Materials:
- 2×4 lumber for forms
- Concrete stakes and duplex nails
- 3/4-inch compactable gravel base
- Rebar (#3 or #4, with wire ties) or welded wire mesh
- Ready-mix concrete (3,000–4,000 PSI minimum) or pre-mixed bags
- Concrete curing compound or plastic sheeting
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Layout and Staking
Mark the perimeter of the sidewalk with stakes and string line. Check for square corners with the 3-4-5 triangle method. Mark the string 1/8 inch per foot lower toward the drainage outlet — this is your built-in drainage slope.
Step 2: Excavation
Dig out the area to a depth of approximately 8 inches below finished grade — 4 inches for the gravel base plus 4 inches for the concrete slab. Remove all vegetation and organic material. In Murrieta, you’ll likely hit expansive clay soil; remove it fully from the pour zone rather than pouring over it.
Step 3: Gravel Base and Compaction
Add 4 inches of compactable 3/4-inch gravel (also called Class II base material). Compact it with a plate compactor in two 2-inch lifts. The base should be firm — your foot shouldn’t leave an impression. Do not skip this step; it’s the most important factor in preventing slab cracking on Murrieta’s clay soil.
Step 4: Set Form Boards
Use 2×4 lumber as your forms. Stakes every 2–3 feet will hold the boards in place. Set the top of the forms to your finished height, accounting for the drainage slope you established. Double-check the top edges are level laterally but sloped longitudinally for drainage.
Step 5: Rebar Placement
For a residential sidewalk on Murrieta’s soil, use #3 rebar on 18-inch centers running lengthwise. Support the rebar 2 inches off the gravel base with rebar chairs (small plastic spacers) so it ends up in the middle of the slab thickness. Tie intersections with wire.
Wire mesh is an alternative but is less effective on expansive soil — it tends to migrate to the bottom of the slab during the pour, ending up where it provides minimal tensile benefit.
Step 6: Pour the Concrete
Have your concrete delivered or mix bags in batches. Start pouring from one end and work toward the other. Don’t let the concrete drop more than 5 feet from the chute. Use a shovel or screed rake to spread it into the forms, working out large air pockets.
In Murrieta’s summer heat: schedule pours for early morning (before 8 AM if possible). Concrete sets faster in high temperatures, which shortens your working window significantly. Have your crew and tools ready before the truck arrives.
Step 7: Screed and Float
Strike off excess concrete with a 2×4 screed board pulled across the top of the forms. Follow with a bull float (for wider slabs) or hand float to bring moisture to the surface and embed aggregate slightly.
Step 8: Control Joints
Cut or tool control joints every 4–6 feet along the length of the walkway. These joints are intentional weak points that direct where the slab will crack if it moves — keeping cracks straight and invisible rather than random and obvious. Joints should be cut to 1/4 of the slab depth (1 inch for a 4-inch slab).
Step 9: Finish
Once the bleed water (sheen) has evaporated and the surface is firm to a light touch, apply your final finish. For a standard broom finish, draw a push broom across the surface perpendicular to the walkway direction. Edge the perimeter with an edging tool to round the slab corners (reduces chipping).
Step 10: Cure
Curing is how concrete develops strength. In Murrieta’s hot, dry climate, curing is especially important — exposed concrete dries out too fast, which weakens the surface layer.
Options:
- Apply a curing compound (spray-on liquid) immediately after finishing
- Cover with plastic sheeting weighted at the edges for 7 days
- Wet-cure by misting with water and covering with wet burlap
Keep foot traffic off for 48 hours. Keep vehicle traffic off for 7 days minimum.
Murrieta-Specific Considerations
Clay soil: Murrieta’s native soil is expansive — it swells with moisture and shrinks when dry. This is the leading cause of cracked concrete in our area. A proper gravel base (Step 3) is not optional here.
Summer heat: Concrete poured in temperatures above 90°F sets faster, which reduces your working time and can cause surface cracking if the slab dries unevenly. Early-morning pours, sun shading, and pre-wetting the base are standard practices in summer months.
Tree roots: If any trees are within 10–15 feet of your planned sidewalk, have a certified arborist assess root locations. Roots growing under a new slab will crack and heave it within 5–10 years — it’s worth addressing before you pour.
Permits: Most residential sidewalk additions in Murrieta do not require a building permit if they’re replacing an existing walk or adding a private path. Work adjacent to a public sidewalk may involve the city. Check with the City of Murrieta Building Department or ask your contractor.
When to Hire a Concrete Sidewalk Contractor Instead
The DIY process above is accurate, but here’s the honest assessment of when hiring makes more sense:
- You don’t have the tools — A plate compactor, bull float, and forms add up to $200–$400 in rentals. Factor this into the DIY cost comparison.
- The job is over 2–3 cubic yards — Bag concrete becomes impractical; ready-mix trucks require a crew that can place and finish quickly.
- You have expansive clay soil and no experience — Subbase errors are invisible until years later. A contractor who works Murrieta soil daily knows exactly what’s needed.
- You need permits or HOA approval — A licensed contractor handles this; DIY work often goes unpermitted, which can cause complications at resale.
- You want a decorative finish — Stamped and exposed aggregate concrete requires skill and specific timing that’s very difficult to achieve without experience.
For most residential sidewalks in Murrieta, professional installation costs $8–$14 per square foot — the 120 sq ft example above would run $960–$1,680.
